Notepad++
Notepad++ is a free (under the GPL license) source code editor which supports several programming languages under Windows environment. It's also a lightweight replacement of Notepad. It has many nice features, and is very customizable.

This is the best screen capture software I have ever used, and I never needed to do anything beyond the free version's abilities. It can be configured to capture the full screen, an active window, or a portion of the screen selected by the user. It can also automatically create a GIF or a JPEG file.
